What Will You Learn?

  • The majority of premodern scholars fall into the traditionalist group, which is divided into four categories by Behnam Sadeghi and Mohsen Goudarzi: revisionists, sceptics, neo-traditionalists, and traditionalists. Sadeghi and Goudarzi state that the conventional narrative
  • believed that the Qur'an was gradually spread by the Prophet Muhammad. A few of his companions assembled manuscripts of the holy text. These codices were not the same. Driven by the distinctions and desire for consistency among Muslims, the Caliph 'Uthmān—who was a Companion himself—instituted a standard version. He, or rather, a group of Companions chosen by him, accomplished this by sending master copies of the Qur'an to various cities (codices that varied only slightly amongst themselves), which the recipients then duplicated. Different readers interpreted this standard text in different ways over the ensuing decades and centuries.
